Introduction of MBBS Program


This program aims at cultivating elementary doctors of high quality who can engage in medical practice with effectiveness and security after graduation under the guidance of senior doctors, and have proper foundation to further study through their lives and make advanced study in a certain discipline field of the medical science.

Students of this specialty should master basic theory, knowledge and skills of medicine required for medical practice and possess good thought and morals and career attitude so as to lay a firm foundation for the continued education after graduation.

1. To ensure the effective communication between students and patients, courses in the first and second year will be taught in English; the third and fourth year will be bilingual teaching; the fifth and sixth year will be taught in Chinese.

2. Clinical courses consist of theory teaching and clinical clerkship. The main four courses will take the mode of bedside teaching and clinical clerkship with 36 weeks in total, 12 weeks for internal medicine; 12 weeks for Surgery; 6 weeks for gynecology and obstetrics; 6 weeks for Pediatrics during the 8th and 9th semesters. Ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatology and venereology, neurology and psychiatry, lemology (infectious diseases), stomatology, emergency medicine and rehabilitation medicine will be finished during the 10th semester, then enter the stage of clinical practice. (No summer and winter holiday for clinical courses and internship from the 8th semester.)

3. HUST would help students choose one of the affiliated hospitals - Tongji Affiliated Hospital and Union Affiliated Hospital to finish their clinical clerkship and internship. Both of these two hospitals are top-ranking in China.

4. The courses of Preventive Medicine include: the labor hygiene and occupational diseases, nutrient hygiene, environmental hygiene, children’s and women’s health, and clinical epidemiology.

5. The courses of Health Management include: health law, health management, health economics and community health, etc.

6. The students who have finished the courses required by the Teaching Plan and passed the Graduation Examination will be awarded the Diploma as well as the Bachelor’s Degree in Medicine when he/she meets the requirements of Regulations Concerning Academic Degrees in the People’s Republic of China. The English version could be translated as MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine & Bachelor of Surgery).

Objective and History

Proximately to the Yellow Crane Tower on the bank of the Yangtze River lies a hospital renowned far and near – Tongji Hospital, Tongji Medical College, Huazhong University of Science & Technology.

In 1900, Tongji Hospital was founded by Mr. Erich Paulum, a German doctor, in Shanghai. After 114 years of construction and development, it has grown into an innovative modern hospital integrating medical care, teaching and research. With a complete array of disciplines, a distinguished gathering of experts and an ample force of teachers, and with exquisite medical techniques, state-of-the-art diagnostic and therapeutic equipment, outstanding research capabilities and sophisticated scientific management, it has leaped to the front row of China’s hospitals.

School Strength and Area of Excellence

The hospital comprises 52 clinical and paramedical departments with a total of 4,000 beds, among which 8 are national key disciplines, and the Department of Rehabilitation is designated a training and research center of WHO. The medical orientation of the hospital is: building 1 center – Central China’s center of medical and health care; establishing 3 bases – base for treating critical cases, base for surgical treatment, and base for the care of high-level intellectuals and officials; and playing a 4-fold role – as a center, as a model, as a guide, and as a radiant of medical service.

The main indices of the hospital’s medical workload have been breaking Hubei’s medical records. The number of outpatient and emergency cases takes the lead in Hubei Province for more than 10 successive years. In 2013, these indices amounted to 3.81 million outpatient and emergency cases, 142,000 discharged patients and 80,000 operations.
